Foley High School students Jeff Parker and Sarah Davis are recipients of the Melvin W. Roberts scholarship.  The award was presented to these students for their demonstration of diligence, honor, tenacity and a strong sense of community.

Melvin Roberts spent most of his 97 years working for the City of Foley ensuring the safety of children and providing a place for children to go and simply be children.  Having a job that made a positive difference in someone's life, being honorable, possessing integrity are the qualities that exemplified Roberts.

The scholarship, set up by his family to honor Melvin Roberts, is a fitting tribute to a man who chose the road not taken by most of us, who remained behind to help his family though he received an athletic scholarship to the University of Alabama. If his road was more difficult, if it brought less acclaim, Roberts never considered his decision as a sacrifice. He simply did what had to be done and he did it with the grace and dignity that came to symbolize Melvin Roberts until his death.
