Scott Keenan's AP Statistics class has been studying proper methods of collecting data and conducting statistically correct experiments. The students had to develop an experiment to determine whether short-rotor paper helicopters or long-rotor paper helicopters had an overall quicker descent time. The groups of students created their experimental design, made paper helicopters, tested the helicopters, collected data, and analyzed the data. The students experienced first hand in a simple experiment how difficult it is to collect accurate data, control for lurking variables, to correctly state the results from the experiment, and what has to happen in order to make a cause-and-effect conclusion. The helicopter project concluded the unit about collecting and producing accurate data.
